Big East Commissioner Mike Tranghese will step down from his position effective June 30, 2009.
"I have been privileged to work with outstanding Presidents and athletic directors for nearly 30 years,” said Tranghese. “Looking back to when Dave Gavitt created the conference, it is truly amazing how far we have come.”
Tranghese succeeded Gavitt as Commissioner on June 21, 1990 after 11 years of service to the Big East, the previous nine years as associate commissioner. During his tenure as Commissioner, Tranghese has guided the league to its current 16-team alignment, the largest in the NCAA Division I.
Shortly after being named Commissioner, Tranghese directed and oversaw the creation of BIG EAST football, which began competition in 1991. His leadership helped the Big East become a charter member of the Bowl Championship Series.
“I believe our conference is undergoing an unprecedented period of success,” Tranghese said. “Our basketball conference does not have to take a back seat to anyone and our football has progressed so quickly. Our Olympic sports are stronger than ever. And I believe everything is in place for the Big East to be even better in the future.”
No loss at this point.
Monarch Tranghese was asleep at the wheel when BC, VaTech and Miami jumped ship, showing how out-of-touch he had become. His desperate raid of Conf-USA to replace those well-established strong all-sport schools lowered the conference academically with Lville and Cincy, and together with 1-sport Marquette and DePaul created a bloated far-flung basketball league. He gets a D grade for his management of BE football. A change here has been overdue.
P.S. Adam, can we expect his majesty's decree on his issues with Fred Hill re: the Seton Hall game "controversy" before leaving us?

1-sport Marquette won the Men's Golf Championship this past season.
Apparently, they play 2 sports in Milwaukee.

While I refer to the major NCAA sports, congrats to Marquette's golf championship, especially since most top college golfers go play down south or out west?

Rising-GeoWeah is referring to Marquette winning the BE Golf Championship. UCLA is the national golf champs, beating perreniel power Stanford (Tiger Woods' alma mater) this year.

Big East Golf Champs are like winning the hockey title in the Sahara Desert Conference. I'm sorry, but Marquette and DePaul are not a good fit for the Big East either geographically or for team sports scheduling balance.

As a long-suffering chronic high 'teens handicapper, I'd do cartwheels in winning a BE, Div III or Boro Recreation League Golf championship. No doubt however that Tranghese overreached with Depaul and Marquette. ND is enough for that basketball market (Chicago region). If Memphis and UCF were to join BE for hoops and football (re: major sports), the BE needs to consider dropping Marq, DePaul and ND if ND continues to spurn BE football. Let those 3 schools go to Conf-USA in basketball, etc.
